Project overview
As the country pays more attention to the water environment quality, Shanghai has responded positively to the State Council's "Ten Articles on Water" and upgrading the No. 1 and 2 plants of Zhuyuan to improve the effluent quality. The project is located in Gaodong Town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, covering a total area of about 23.3 hm2. The wastewater treatment plant has undertaken sewage treatment in Putuo, Changning, Jing'an and some Baoshan, Huangpu, Yangpu and Pudong, with the treated water discharged into Yangtze River. Specifically, the design capacity of the upgraded supplement project is 800,000 t/day, and the coefficient of variation is 1.5. The total water treatment capacity of the upgraded Zhuyuan Water Plant is 2.2 million t/day. In combination with the relevant design of sponge city, the project adopts the improved A2O high-efficiency settling tank deep bed sand filtration UV sodium hypochlorite collaborative disinfection process, and the effluent standard reaches Class A standard.

Demonstration significance of the project
With the capacity of the original Zhuyuan No.1 Plant reduced by 1.7 million tons to 600,000 t, and that of No. 2 plant from 500,000 m3/day to 300,000 t/d, and with the upgrading supplement of 800,000 t/d from the newly built plant, the total water supply capacity is kept at 2.2 million m3/day. From the perspective of the upgrading supplement project, the problem of rainwater overflow is also solved. The whole Zhuyuan Water Plant project serves 1/3 of the water volume in Shanghai. According to the requirements of the whole country, the water, gas, mud, sound and landscape shall meet the relevant standards, and the sewage shall be discharged into the Yangtze River after treatment in the upgrading. The upgrading shall play an important role and positive significance in further improving the water environment in the Yangtze River basin.

Principle of process/equipment
Ultraviolet disinfection is to irradiate the water flow with the UVC produced by the specially-designed ultraviolet generator. When various bacteria, viruses, parasites, algae and other pathogens in the water are exposed to a certain dose of UVC radiation, the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) structure in their cells is damaged, which deprives the ability to replicate and reproduce. Because the life cycle of bacteria and viruses is generally very short, bacteria and viruses that cannot reproduce will die rapidly, thus achieving the purpose of disinfection and decontamination without the use of any chemical drugs.

Process/equipment characteristics

Ultraviolet disinfection equipment is a physical disinfection and is not affected by pH. It has a spectral disinfection effect on pathogenic microorganisms and does not produce toxic and harmful by-products to human body. It has high disinfection efficiency for both cryptosporidium and giardia lamblia. It does not increase AOC, BDOC and other by-products that damage the biological stability of water quality in the pipeline network. It has small area occupancy and short retention time

1. Implementation Effect
The project adopts BIM to control the technical details. Considering the large scale and tight construction period of the project, the BIM design is adopted to achieve design collaboration, 3D visualization and digital delivery, and a work manual is carried out based on the modeling standards, delivery standards and ultimate application standards that firstly adopted for 800,000 tons of new construction. Through the linkage calculation of the AAO process according to the structure sequence, the coagulation model, the ASM2 model and the secondary settling tank model of the simulation process flow, all indexes shall be better than the expected design values after upgrading. The pool type of each biological treatment structure shall be optimized with the mathematical model, the corridor shall adopt rotary flow layout and has the dual characteristics of flow pushing and complete mixing.The application of the BIM design has solved the deficiency of the traditional design to the greatest extent and realized the landing of the excellent engineering.

2. Social benefit

No. 1 and 2 Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plants in Pudong New Area, upon completion, will significantly improve the surrounding water environment, greatly reduce the pollution load discharged into the Yangtze River, and play an important role in further improving water environment and ecological balance at the estuary of Yangtze River.

3. Ecological benefit
With the completion of the project, the wastewater treatment capacity will reach 2.2 million m³/day. The main indicators of effluent quality of all newly built and reconstructed water plants will satisfy Class I A standard, accounting for about 1/3 of the treated water volume in Shanghai area, which has an important role and positive significance in further improving the water environment and ecological balance of the Yangtze River estuary.
